Kenya Civic Youth Alliance(KCYA)
The Youth Civic Empowerment project, implemented through the Kenya Civic Youth Alliance (KCYA), is an initiative of Diaspora Community Projects – Kenya (DCP-Kenya) aimed at promoting civic education, democratic participation, youth leadership and accountable governance among young people across Kenya.
The project recognises the important role that young people play in shaping Kenya’s democratic future. Despite representing a significant proportion of the country’s population, many young people continue to face barriers to meaningful participation in governance, public policy development and decision-making processes. Youth Civic Empowerment seeks to address these challenges by equipping young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to exercise their democratic rights and fulfil their civic responsibilities.
Through civic education, voter awareness campaigns, leadership development, community mobilisation and public engagement initiatives, the project encourages young Kenyans to become informed, active and responsible citizens. Particular emphasis is placed on engaging students in universities, colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, alongside young people in grassroots communities.
The initiative also promotes understanding of the Constitution of Kenya, electoral processes, public accountability, transparency and the importance of peaceful democratic participation. By encouraging constructive dialogue between young people, public institutions and community stakeholders, the project seeks to strengthen democratic values and create opportunities for youth voices to influence policies and decisions affecting their lives.
The Kenya Civic Youth Alliance operates as a semi-autonomous project of DCP-Kenya, with its own youth-led leadership structure responsible for coordinating its programmes, activities and engagement with stakeholders. The Alliance is chaired by Humphrey Omukaga Ekanyait, who leads its youth leadership team in advancing the project’s objectives and promoting meaningful youth participation in civic and democratic processes. This semi-autonomous arrangement enables the Alliance to maintain its distinct youth-led identity while benefiting from its association with DCP-Kenya.
Operating on a non-partisan basis, the Kenya Civic Youth Alliance promotes political neutrality, inclusivity, integrity and responsible citizenship. The project seeks to collaborate with educational institutions, civil society organisations, electoral bodies, county governments and other stakeholders committed to strengthening youth participation in democratic governance.
As part of DCP-Kenya’s wider commitment to community empowerment, social inclusion and sustainable development, Youth Civic Empowerment aims to nurture a generation of informed, confident and socially responsible young leaders capable of making meaningful contributions to Kenya’s democratic and socio-economic development.
